Jane’s Party Sign To Cameron House Records

New Album Hot Noise Out Digitally May 21, In Stores On June 4

After releasing the ‘Til You Got Yours EP and hitting the road earlier this year, Jane’s Party are happy to announce that their sophomore full length album, Hot Noise will be released by Toronto’s Cameron House Records.

“Our signing with Cameron House Records for the release of ‘Hot Noise” is symbolic of the incredible relationship we’ve formed with the Cameron House label, venue and community over the past year. Throughout the creation of this album, we have practically lived at the Cameron house, drawing influence from our peers – both musicians and listeners – while performing and growing as artists. This is a partnership that was bound to happen, and we’re excited to be joining such a talented roster of musicians.” Jane’s Party

“Signing Jane’s party was a natural fit for us, they’ve been integral to the development of our current artists as a backing band, which is a testament to the fine musicianship these four possess. ‘Hot Noise’ expands our labels musical reach, while staying true to the fine artistry we strive to curate”
Mike McKeown, Cameron House Records

Recorded at Zeus’ Ill Eagle Studio with Taylor Knox, Hot Noisemakes good on the acclaim that has been building since the release of their 2009 debut LP The Garage Sessions. With multiple national tours under their belt and shows supporting artists such as Kathleen Edwards, Matt Mays, Wintersleep, Zeus and as backing band for the Devin Cuddy Band, Jane’s Party have cut their teeth on the road on and off the stage. No surprise then that Jane’s Party will be heading back out on tour immediately following their hometown album release show on June 1st. All dates are listed below with more to be announced very soon.

Canadian Songwriting Legend, AL TUCK, Releases ‘Stranger at the Wake‘ on Cameron House Records

Available physically in stores across Canada and digitally worldwide on Tuesday May 14th.

“I feel like we have our own living legend. And he’s alive, he’s out on tour… everyone in their right mind should just go sit and listen. He weaves slow stories from the infinite wide range of things that usually stick in the rest of our throats. We’re lucky he’s got the words and he’s sharing them.” - Feist

“If there is a songwriter still around today who writes from a pure subconcious place, and who actually has a Muse, it’s Al Tuck. Just when you think he’s written his best song, you’ll hear another one that reminds you he’s easily one of the best songwriters in the country. Al is the real deal.” – Charles Austin (producer)

“Al Tuck is the real deal, a songwriter of the highest order, blessed and possessed with a double dose of the gift. Cut from the same cloth, as any of our country’s greatest: Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell. I’m fully aware of how outlandish and overwrought a statement this might seem, but I’ve felt this way for years now, and with every new record of Al’s, I’m further convinced. Hands down, he’s the greatest songwriter of my generation, an opinion shared by many of my peers.” - Jason Collett

On his seventh studio album Stranger at the Wake, Al Tuck continues to do what he has always done – write and record songs how he hears them, with no attempt made to keep up with the Joneses, unless their first name is George.

Stranger at the Wake keeps the listener guessing, often taking giant steps stylistically from track to track, some of which are unlike anything Tuck has released; others just what his fans have come to expect. Acapella gospel, wordy funk, stonesy rock & roll, epic country, Irishish folk, heart-tugging ballads, clairvoyant jazz. It’s all here, held together by an unseen unifying strand, which just might be the truth itself.

Many of the lyrics occupy that sweet spot Tuck has found somewhere between Bob Dylan’s self-renewing complexities and Hank Williams’ straight-shooting minimalism. The subject matter ranges from the theological to the socio-political, through the post-marital and back again. A tale told of life on the road is followed by a postcard from home. The remarkable mingles with the mundane. Al’s method-acted role here is that of a part-time whisky-tippling, loose-cannon son of a preacher man.

Appearing hot on the heels of its predecessors Under Your Shadow and Food for the Moon, Stranger at the Wake completes a trilogy of albums woven with great care which fearlessly depict the grim yet exhilarating reality of our times.

Tuck declares, “My last three records are absolutely going to stand. If you don’t get them now, I hope you will soon. But by then it may be too late.”

This 2011 release is the second offering from country-folk outfit Rattlesnake Choir is proof that tried and tested genres can still be taken to new places. Rattlesnake Choir features a formidable roster of renowned musicians with John Borra (guitar/vocals/ harmonica), Sam Ferrara (percussion/vocals), Tony Benattar (upright bass/dobro/vocals), Miranda Mulholland (violin/vocals), and Michael Boguski (piano/accordion). Recorded on 2” tape, this record was made for vinyl. (12”, 12 tracks)

If you know anything about the Cameron House, you probably know something about Ned. In the 80’s Ned was one of the guys who brought the urban cowboy thing to Queen Street, and part of the reason that you can still find cowboy shirts in Kensington Market today. Ned’s legendary Saturday Matinees, which eventually turned into night shows (due to “rock and roll punctuality”, and boozing in his upstairs accommodations) were the stuff of legend and anyone who saw them remembers them with great warmth admiration and a general haze that encompasses the Cameron in that era.

When Jim Masyk, Ned’s brother, came to us with 200 New Old Stock copies of Ned’s, aptly named band The Handsome Neds 7” recording of In Spite of the Danger (Steve Koch – Guitar, Rene Fratura – Bass, J.D. Weatherstone, and Ned on Guitar) that he had squired away in his basement, it was a no brainer to release them on Cameron House Records. What better occasion than Record Store Day? Side A of the 45 features the title track, In Spite of the Danger, and on the B side, Ain’t No room for Cheatin.’ Its happening this 4/20, check your participating record store!

To celebrate the occasion, Rattlesnake Choir will be playing at The Dakota Tavern on April 20th – 10pm.

Here’s a note and song from Al Tuck.

“This is my song for Stompin’ Tom, written and recorded in the summer of 2012.

A friend of mine had expressed admiration for a song I had written about Gene MacLellan and suggested I do something similar for Mr Connors. The very next day I did.
I am proud to say this recording features Tom’s own fiddle/guitar player Billy MacInnis. I will forever regret not having released it – or at least sending it to Billy – sooner than this, the very sad occasion of the great singer’s death. Like the man himself said, in one of the finest choruses ever penned:

“To it and at it, at it and to it
You’ve got to tune your attitude in
If you don’t get at it when you get to it
You won’t get to it to get at it again.”

I hope rumours of a third book are true and that it finds it’s way to the marketplace.
My condolences to his family and friends.”

Song written by: Al Tuck

Recorded by: Mark Geddes

Guitar/Vocals: Al Tuck

Fiddle/Guitar: Billy MacInnis

The next release from Cameron House Records certainly has some family ties.

The band aptly named FERRARO was formed by the three Ferraro brothers, who are no strangers to the Toronto music scene.

The brothers are sons of Paul and Anne Marie Ferraro (Sannella) and nephews to the late Paul Sannella, who teamed up to open the Cameron House in 1981, long before Cosmo, Gianni, and Tally were born.

Having taken in a lifetime of music, being surrounded by artists and musicians that occupy the rooms of the Cameron House, their sound has been influenced by the bars eclectic past, and bolstered by their own individual musical tastes.

The eldest brother, Cosmo who is the current owner/manager of the Cameron House and Co-Founder of Cameron House Records states, “Gianni and I started playing together when I was 14 and he was 10. Not long after that, Tally wanted in, and we told him that he had to learn to play the bass if he wanted to join the band; he was six years old then.”

It wasn’t long before they would start playing shows to friends and family in the back room of the Cameron House. With Cosmo (25) on guitar, Gianni (21) on drums, and Tally (17) on bass, they’ve been playing live bar shows for over five years. They’ve enlisted their cousin Tom on electric guitar to keep it in the family, which makes up the current edition of FERRARO.

For many years Ferraro was a cover band that played no original music whatsoever. It was through this method that they were able to develop their musical skills and get their live performance “chops” up to a certain standard. During the past year and a half, Gianni started writing some of his own material which was incorporated into their live shows, which now consist largely of original music.

An interesting dynamic that sets Ferraro apart from many other bands, other than the fact they all look the same, is how their original songs are written and sung (for the most part) by the drummer. All four members do play a prominent vocal role, both during their live shows and on their debut recordings.

Recorded at Revolution and Ill Eagle studios in Toronto, the six song EP will be released Saturday March 9th at The Cameron House (back room) (408 Queen st. West) 9:30 pm. Sam Cash opens and Tarantuela closes the evening in the front room.

Cameron House Records is pleased to announce a new distribution partnership with Warner Music Canada. Effective immediately, the deal accentuates the natural progression of the new independent label based out of the legendary Cameron House bar in Toronto.

Founded by Cosmo Ferraro and Michael McKeown, the label is accumulating some of the most talented up and coming roots based artists on the Canadian music scene. With debut releases from five artists in 2012, there is no telling where they may be headed.

McKeown states “This is an extremely exciting time for us, with our roots planted firmly in the history of The Cameron, and the Queen street music scene, there seems to be a new generation of musicians and songwriters who have had the proverbial torch passed on to them. Now with this partnership with Warner Music Canada, we are able to have a greater reach, as the music we’ve cultivated is no longer confined by walls, it’s ready to spill out to the rest of Canada and beyond.”

“The Cameron House stage has a long legacy as the launching pad for some of Canada’s greatest musicians,” says Warner Music Canada President Steve Kane. “Warner Music Canada has been proud of our longstanding relationship many of those artists including Blue Rodeo and Ron Sexsmith. I’ve been going to hear music at the Cameron for over thirty years and I truly believe that the current era of songwriters performing there are as important as any in its history. We look forward to lending support to Cosmo and Michael in introducing to the world to the next generation of great acts to emerge from the Cameron House.”

Artists who have released material on the label include (in order of release) Handsome Ned, David Baxter, Kayla Howran, Nichol Robertson, Tarantuela, Rattlesnake Choir, Devin Cuddy, and Whitney Rose.

Local Toronto Musicians and Cameron House Records Launch a Benefit Concert Series in support of Regent Park School of Music

Cameron House Records in association with The Regent Park School of Music are pleased to announce a four part concert series opening on Saturday January 12th 2013, and continuing with shows on the following Saturday’s: February 23rd, March 30th, and April 27th.

The “Deeply Rooted” series will take place in the historic back room of the Cameron House in downtown Toronto with two acts per night. Doors will open at 8:30 pm for all shows. Please see the line-up listed below for who will be playing on each date. There will be no cover; however donations are encouraged, as all proceeds are going to The Regent Park School of Music (RPSM).

RPSM provides quality music education to children who cannot otherwise afford it. The benefits of music education run deep, and provide a way for disadvantaged youth to learn the values of creativity, discipline, and collaboration. To provide this type of head start in life is to provide another way to keep youth off the streets after school and engaged in creative, inspirational activities leading children towards post-secondary education and the development of self-esteem and other important life skills. It’s food for the soul, and should be available for all of our children.

The “Deeply Rooted” concert series was formed in order to support current and future musicians, and celebrate the art of making music. The series will showcase some of the finest roots based artists in Toronto, and will be hosted by the Director of RPSM, Richard Marsella. Here is the line-up:

Al Tuck to release 7th studio album on Cameron House Records

Here are the lyrics to a track from the record, written about a night off in Calgary while on tour with Jason Collet in November 2010.

They don’t have winter tires on rental cars, just so you know

Today we slid across the Rockies through ice, sleet, and snow

My friend has retired to our room for a break

Guess that leaves me to be the stranger at the wake

Hey lucky me, I am the stranger at the wake

Didn’t know when we came here this would be the scene

The scene of a memorial gathering

It’s so cold; going out would seem a mistake

‘Stay where you are’ is the best advice that you could take

And where you are, you are the stranger at the wake

Atlantic theme bar with a fish nets and jokes

Donairs and Frank magazines forHalifaxfolks

I feel so at home think my heart it might break

I’m a lot like Joan burning slow at the stake

Long way from home, I am the stranger at the wake

Too many parties and too many pals

Too many buddies and not enough gals

Only so long one man can ache

Do you think she’s here, that certain friend we need to make?

Strange game to play when you’re the stranger at the wake

Give me Guinness and Bushmills, doubles if you please

Or you could save us some trouble by pouring in threes

I have not had as much as I can take

I come in peace, there’s more that I can make

I’ll spend it all, I am the stranger at the wake

I can’t help but wonder what everyone thinks

As the waitress keeps serving me never-ending drinks

I’m the real McCoy I feel quite the rake

You’ve been too kind; whatever’s left is yours to take

I am resigned to be the stranger at the wake

No I didn’t know her she never knew me

Though I know I’ve forgotten two or three

Two or three maybe, give or take

Nine or ten, hope their hearts didn’t break

But that was then, now I’m the stranger at the wake

So smilin, so cheerful like many of her age,

Or at least judging by her facebook page

They’ve projected up there on that screen by the stage

And still no clue why her own life she would take

What can you do when you’re the stranger at the wake

Some music was played, not too great, truth be told

As I knocked back my last glasses, one black and one gold

Wantin’ to sing some song for somebody’s sake

But I take my leave, leaving them to speculate

Who was that man? Who was the stranger at the wake?

Who was that man? Who was the stranger at the wake?
